Paul and Tracy met preparing for the release of Paul’s solo acoustic album Prairie Stop in 2005. What started as a 3-song experiment has since blossomed into a fully engaged writing and performing effort.
Paul has been a guitar and songwriting teacher for over 20 years and draws musical influence from Dave Matthews, Shawn Colvin, Elliot Smith, and Leonard Cohen.
Tracy grew up on classical Suzuki Violin, then developed her improvisational and song-writing ear playing pop, blues, folk, and rock.
They share the role of lead vocalist, co-write all their original music, and can deliver it as a duo or with a full band behind them.
Their debut CD GAME has been well received by music critics and listeners alike. Mowbray and Mills entertain audiences regularly on and around Vancouver Island, and are planning their assault on the rest of Canada and beyond.

Mowbray and Mills' "Blog":
Feb 2010 Update - so many missed months! Not sure what happened? We've been playing gigs, rehearsing, teaming up with other super musicians to form our "band" COF (Circle of Friends). Also, leading the Victoria Regional Writers Group through monthly songwriting workshops. It's fun...but I guess we're busy! But who isn't?
September 13, 2009 - Blackberry Ramble Fundraiser. Over 100 cyclists rode anywhere from 10 to 100km to raise money for the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation. The least we could do was play a little music for them. They raised over $30,000!
August 22, 2009 - Shipstones Pub, Salt Spring Island. Good weather, great crowd, and a really nice sound. The gulls were smiling.
August 8, 2009 - Sidney Bandstand - Feed the Soul Benefit Concert Rain anyone?
July & August 2009 - Peninsula Country Market. Summer on the Peninsula is delightful. We played the country market at the Saanich Fairgrounds twice. Teamed up with good friends Strawberry Vale.
June 28, 2009 - Feed the Soul Charity Concert for the Sidney Food Back, Pier Hotel, Sidney Quite a night. We and seven other musical groups performed songs from WestCost Acoustic's compilation CD to about 250 screaming (yes - screaming) supporters. Everyone walked away with a brand-new CD, signed programs, and ringing ears. So much fun for a great cause. Watch for more events supporting the Food Bank from Jim Townley (producer).
June 27, 2009 - The Black Stilt, Victoria SianEllen opened for us with Marc Schaefer on guitar. A full-house got the chance to hear her lovely voice and new songs from her latest CD Float. Brad Hawkes lent his percussive hands all night. Paul and I debuted some new songs - the same ones that CBC has recently played. They were well received - despite the noise from the Cappucino machine! And special thanks to Lorraine for the pics! And to Olivia for working the door! ....it does take a village.
May 11, 2009 - Heron Rock Bistro, Victoria Victoria's Kelby MacNayr joined us on percussion for our second appearance at the Heron Rock Bistro. Super addition of rhythm and texture! He's back again with us on the 22nd! And thanks to our friends who came out ...in case you were wondering...that rather odd instrument Paul was holding was his new Banjetar. (I even got to play on it for the new song - Do You Love Me?).
April 11, 2009 - Spiral Cafe, Victoria. Stephen Ogden (bass, vocals) and Brad Hawkes (percussion) joined us for our Spring Feel-Good Charity fundraiser. We raised $127 towards the cause, and the lucky draw winners took home a bottle of organic Bonterra Cabernet, and some chocolate too. Actually, everyone got their fill of chocolate as the Easter Bunny left it's mark on every table. Thanks to all who came, and listened so attentively - it's great to meet new friends, and to see old ones singing along to the tunes.
MAR 30, 2009 - Heron Rock Bistro, Victoria. Wish we could have switched places with the audience tonight. The food looked delicious as it walked by in front of us! (we weren't disappointed later we we'd finished the night). And, it was a good night. We brought our new Fishman SoloAmps - sweet, sweet, acoustic sound. Reports were good, we'll keep them.
MAR 7, 2009 - Fresh Cup Roastery Cafe, Sidney. This is THE happening music spot on the Peninsula. Lucy Ransom welcomes first timers and "experiencialistas" to the open stage every Thursday night from 6-9pm. Early this summer, owner Jim Townley will produce a compilation CD of the artists that make it through the audition process and use the proceeds from the release party to support the local Food Bank. more here.
MAR 7, 2009 - Spiral Cafe, Victoria. Mike Raymer's place was hopping. Full crowd - all buzzing on caffeine. Helping us keep the groove was Brad Hawkes on percussion - much fun, and great to meet a few more live music lovers.
Dec 31, 2008 - Panorama Rec Centre. Celebrated the New Year's surrounded by family, fun and music. Panorama put on a terrific event despite the cold.
Nov 15, 2008 - The Paisley, Victoria. We did come back, and turned it up a notch with Kris Covlin (sax) and Steve Sutton (bass). Lots of new sounds with a four-piece. Lots of good feedback from the listeners. Look for more musicians playing Mowbray and Mills in 2009.
Sept 12, 2008 - The Paisley, Victoria. Thank you John and Heather for booking us, being good hosts and paying us to play in the Paisley Restaurant, Esquimalt. Yet another of Victoria's best kept secrets. A room with food, a good bar, good sound and a stage that has room to move and groove on. We enjoyed and were kept on our toes by the great audience response. Thanks Brian, Christine, Bea, the Fairfied group, Redmond the comedian, Lori, Louise, Vernon and many, many others. Got a feeling we'll come back to this room! Thanks Dave too.
July 13, 2008 - Tree House Cafe, Salt Spring Island. Mark, the new owner of the Tree House cafe, has kept a good thing going and made it even better. Live music every night in the summer...under the stars, surrounded by friendly people, good food, stellar sound, and a great vibe. We came, we played, we loved it.
June 8, 2008 - Khona Cafe, Mahon Hall, Spiral Cafe Seems that Paul and I are on a mission to play in every coffee house in Victoria and Salt Spring. Why not? We've met some great new friends and have enjoyed many a caffeine buzz. At our Spiral Gig we were joined by Steve Sutton on string bass. Great rumble and grooves Steve! And, the Times Colonist article about Paul's "10 shocking truths about being a musician" brought in several who were curious about just what exactly Paul was going to reveal.
May 15, 2008 - Bill Stewart, Monday Magazine Bill reviewed our CD Game - "Mowbray and Mills' voices blend quite gorgeously, as do their delicate guitar and violin interweavings....All in all this is one sweet mellow listen, ripe for late nights or early mornings". More. Thanks Bill!
November 24, 2007 - Spinnaker's Brewpub Thanks to everyone for coming out to fill up Spinnaker's Brew Pub and listen so closely to our two sets! I'd like to mention names from the crowd, but there are too many and then I'd miss some and feel bad. So I'll just say what a pleasure it was for Tracy and I to play for you! Hey Lee, (Spinnaker's Manager) you went the extra mile by getting that board for the Tango dancers - thanks! And to Lilija, David, and Diane of Tango Pacifico, you can dance with us anytime. Me, I'm looking for a red hat now. A Podcast of the party is available on i-Tunes via BullFrog Music.
Tracy and I love to play our original music, and this time it went to a new level of fun with the addition of: Mr. Rhythm, Marc Jenkins on bass (Elephant Island and other bands); blistering and tasteful on the telecaster-Lonny Koch (owner of South Island Studios); a dash of Coltrane, the downtown sounds of Kris Covlin on sax; and making sure that it all sounded good, James Ross handling the sound system and the rhythm box. Big Hank played the harp with soul on Buffalo Skinner, so we asked him to do it twice. All you guys made it look easy, and my personal highlight was playing rhythm and listening to the solos while Marc grooved the bass along. And man Tracy's vocals sounded great with a band behind her. Searching for Service, indeed.
And good grief, watch our site for some upcoming video, Cat and Trevor videoed four tunes, and Jeremiah from Bullfrog Music did some audio recording. Good people all. Thanks everyone for the CD sales too. Tracy and I hope to see you next time! (Paul)
November 17, 2007 - Sooke Folk Music Society Bonus! Paul and I went to play, and ended up listening to several musicians who expressed themselves honestly and openly before a warm and supportive crowd. Thank goodness for community music, and for the hard working people (like Dave Gallant and so many others) who give it an outlet. When we took the stage it felt like we already knew the crowd, having been a part of it. We played Jazz, Blues, Pop, Funk and even a Tango - and the adventuresome and open-minded audience listened to it all. I think the "hit" of the night was our Tango Guilty of Change. Gene, thanks for joining us on Buffalo Skinner, and to all the others who bought CDs, clapped, snapped and sang along. We had fun, and hope you did too. (Tracy)
October 21, 2007 Steffich Fine Art Gallery - when people come and are intensely involved in listening and moving to the music I am a happy man, and so I was very happy at Matt's Fine Art Gallery (Steffich Fine Art) on Saturday. So many poets and painters in the crowd! Good old Salt Spring. Thanks Matt for being such a gracious and relaxed host, and Michele for the unbelievably good treats. With the right people everything is easy. Maybe there's a song in that! (Paul) What a lovely afternoon of musical talent and friends…in such an intimate warm environment. The Art Gallery acoustics were a perfect place to showcase Tracy and Paul's love of music and their talent in producing it. A HUGE thank you to all who donated to our very worthwhile cause GEMA (Giving Everyone Music and Art). We were overwhelmed by your generosity and many kids will now be benefiting from this fund! Thanks for providing such an enjoyable Saturday afternoon! (Michele, GEMA coordinator)
September 16, 2007 Khona Cafe- What a great crowd we played for last night! Andrew's Khona Cafe was full and happening and Miki the barista was in fine form. Special thanks to the BLUE PETER GANG (James Ross - so great you were there) wonderful to see you all (welcome back Linda!); and thanks to Cal for taking photos; and to Kent - a first timer - it was great to meet you. Other musicians in the crowd: Reid Jamieson and Carolyn Mill tapped their toes. Martina Haakenstad of the Victoria Conservatory took a break from rehearsing for her Cabaret this November to listen. To Paul's students and to the families who arranged babysitters to make the trip - thanks so much. We couldn't have asked for a better night - thank you ALL. (Tracy) |
